Born on February 9, 1951, in Pladju (Indonesia).
•
Completed gymnasium β in Rotterdam and studied chemistry in Amsterdam, as well as philosophy in Amsterdam and Strasbourg, between 1969 and 1978
•
Conducted molecular biology research at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam from 1979 to 1980.
•
Taught chemistry at the Montessori Lyceum Amsterdam (1980–1986) and the Herman Jordan Lyceum in Zeist (2001–2007).
•
Has been writing and making films since 1987.
•
Has worked as a skipper of classic canal boats since 2000 and has held a European commercial skipper’s license for all inland waterways since 2008.
•
Has been translating the classical Malay epic Hikayat Hang Tuah since 2003 (a long-term project) and was a co-founder and secretary of the ANBI-registered organization Friends of MacDonald • The Dutch Connection, which annually awarded a prize to a debut work by a young creator that shed new light on the relations between Asia, Europe, and North America.
